For her third solo show with c/o – Atle Gerhardsen L.A. based artist
Amy Adler will present seven new works entitled Phantom Instrument. These
full color pastel drawings on canvas depict the artist in various poses. In
each drawing she appears to play an instrument, possibly a cello, a violin
or a flute. Adler leaves the instrument invisible, in it's absence both the
artist and viewer must imagine the instrument exists.
In her two previous shows with Atle Gerhardsen Amy Adler addressed absence
and the instrument in likewise indirect ways. In the exhibition The Only One
in 1999 Adler was seen playing chords on a guitar in a series of six photographs
from pastel drawings. Only those who played guitar themselves could ‘hear’
the works. Likewise, in the show Young Photographer (2003) a young boy holds
a camera, his oversized zoom lens focused on unseen things outside of the
frame.
Adler has often performed in her own works, while other times she has taken
a more directorial role. In Phantom Instrument the artist draws inspiration
from 70's performance works of Francesca Woodman and Ana Mendieta among others.
She further considers the choreographic works of Yvonne Rainer and Simone
Forti as well as the collected lectures of John Cage entitled "Silence".
The physical act of drawing is mirrored in the awkward poses the artist holds.
For the past several years Adler has veered from the process for which she
is best known, namely unique photographs of her own drawings. No longer photographing
her works she presents the original drawings. In her photographs, it was the
drawing that was invisible, here she substitutes the instrument in it is place.
In these and other recent works Adler continues her exploration of the unobtainable
but employs different strategies for her investigation.
Amy Adler currently lives in Los Angeles and is Associate Professor of Visual
Art at the University of California San Diego. She has had one person shows
at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, the Museum of Contemporary
Art San Diego and The Aspen Art Museum. Amy Adler´s work is included
in several permanent collections including the Deste Foundation, Athens, The
Broad Foundation, Los Angeles and The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles.

In ihrer dritten Einzelausstellung mit c/o – Atle Gerhardsen zeigt die
in Los Angeles lebende Künstlerin Amy Adler sieben neue Arbeiten mit
dem Titel “Phantom Instrument”. Die farbigen Pastellzeichnungen
auf Leinwand stellen die Künstlerin in verscheidenen Posen dar. In jeder
Zeichnung scheint Adler ein Musikinstrument zu spielen wie zum Beispiel Cello,
Violine oder Flöte. Doch bleibt das Instrument unsichtbar und durch diese
Abwesenheit sind Künstlerin sowie Betrachter gezwungen, sich das Instrument
als existierend vorzustellen.
In ihren beiden vorausgegangenen Ausstellungen mit Atle Gerhardsen stellt
Amy Adler auf ähnlich indirekter Weise Bezüge zum Thema Abwesenheit
und zu Musikinstrumenten her. In der Ausstellung “The Only One”
von 1999 konnte man Amy Adler in einer Serie von 6 Fotografien Akkorde auf
einer Gitarre spielen sehen. Nur Besuchern, die selbst Gitarre spielen konnten,
war es möglich, die Arbeiten zu ‘hören’. Ähnlich
in der Ausstellung “Young Photographer” (2003), wo ein Junge unsichtbare
Motive außerhalb des Bildrandes mit einer Kamera mit riesigem Objektiv
fokussiert.
Amy Adler ist häufig selbst in ihren Arbeiten zu sehen, wohingegen sie
in anderen Werksgruppen die Rolle des Regisseurs einnimmt. Mit “Phantom
Instrument” bezieht sich die Künstlerin unter anderem auf die Performances
der 1970er Jahre von Francesca Woodman und Ana Mendieta. Auch dienen die choreographischen
Arbeiten von Yvonne Rainer und Simone Forti sowie die Vorlesungsreihe “Silence”
von John Cage als Anhaltspunkte. Der physikalische Akt des Zeichnens spiegelt
sich in den ungelenken Posen der Künstlerin.
Die Künstlerin ist vor allem für ihre Fotografien, die sie von ihren
eigenen Zeichnungen angefertigt hat bekannt. In den vergangenen Jahren ist
sie allerdings von dieser prozesshaften Arbeitsweise abgekommen und zeigt
nun die Originalzeichnungen. Wo in den Fotografien die Zeichnung unsichtbar
bliebt, tritt nun das Instrument an diese Stelle. In Phantom Instrument sowie
weiteren neuen Arbeiten führt Adler ihre Erkundung des Unerreichbaren
fort, nutzt jedoch andere Strategien für ihre Untersuchungen.
Amy Adler lebt und arbeitet in Los Angeles und ist Associate Professor of
Visual Art an der University of California San Diego. Ihre Werke waren in
Einzelausstellungen im Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, dem Museum
of Contemporary Art San Diego und dem The Aspen Art Museum zu sehen. Amy Adlers
Arbeiten befinden sich in verschiedenen Sammlungen wie der Deste Foundation,
Athens, der Broad Foundation, Los Angeles and dem Museum of Contemporary Art
Los Angeles.
