Press release

Matthew Ritchie
After The Father Costume

Opening reception: Apr 25. 2003, 19–21.00
Duration: Apr 26 – 31. May, 2003

It is a great pleasure to present the first solo show in Berlin by Matthew Ritchie, born in England 1964. Matthew Ritchie lives and works in New York.

Since the mid 1990s Matthew Ritchie has devoted his time as artist and writer to the creation of his own imaginary world, a world of deities and devils, planets and solar systems, triumphs and battles, all best known to himself. This world is expressed, indeed “exists” through his creative oeuvre, which is exactly that, a genuine oeuvre in the sense of its cohesive thematic identity, its continual development of a systematic program.

A work by Ritchie has to be understood surrounded by other works from the same series, in the context of his drawings, sculptural models or multi-media images, ideally as a single all-encompassing installation, an environment in itself.

In this new body of work the narrative arc that Matthew Ritchie has been working on for the last several years seamlessly dissolves into an “information climate” where context and content are helplessly intermingled. Two large paintings, wall drawing, a large sintra corner piece, a neoprene sculpture that ´dives` into the canal and two drawings will form the installation.

“The Father Costume”, a collaboration between Matthew Ritchie and writer Ben Marcus, published by Artspace Books, New York 2002 accompanies the exhibition as an informal catalog to the show. The title of the show refers both back to and away from this collaboration.

This will be Matthew Ritchie’s third solo show with c/o – Atle Gerhardsen. He is currently working on a large touring show starting Dec 2003 at Houston Contemporary Art Museum and traveling to MASS MoCA and the Fabric Workshop and Museum. Upcoming is also a group show at Palais de Tokyo, Paris. In Germany his work is currently included in “Painting Pictures, Painting and Media in the Digital Age”, Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Wolfsburg.

After the Father Costume

Eröffnung: 25. Apr 2003, 19–21 Uhr
Ausstellungsdauer: 26. Apr–31. Mai 2003

Matthew Ritchie, 1964 in England geboren, lebt und arbeitet in New York.
