It is a great pleasure to present Lothar Hempel’s (*1966) first solo show in Berlin.

The artist shows a new installation, entitled Diamonds, that consists of different ‚components’. The interrelation of the works is the main issue and creates a theatrical scene. The artist himself says: “It is the moment ‚Now’ that is questioned from a bulky historical perspective. How did we become what we are and in which way can we change?”

On display are two colourful tile pieces, reminiscent of the design that was used for decorating railway stations in the 30´s. “They function as backgrounds for utopian situations that won’t be expected anymore.”

A monumental white wooden wheel is attached to the wall and juts into the space. The title of this piece is Implosion. “It’s a concentration of repressive aesthetic experience and functions also as a setting. It is a statement and suggestion at the same time that can transform the visitor into a participating actor.”

The video Ikarus, features two women that are posing like in a silent film. They sing in a backyard for money and have a ‘bizarre experience’. The video looks like a cinematic dream.

Four acrylic paintings depict fictitious personalities or appropriate historical characters. Dora Diamant, for example, refers to Kafka’s last girlfriend. Citation: Kafka studied the Torah and Talmud with Dora; both were dreaming of opening up a small restaurant in Tel Aviv: Dora, inexperienced in the household should have been working in the kitchen and the unhandy, weak Kafka should have served the guests.

Three crocheted wool diamonds that are pinned to the wall “range between folklore and modernism”. A poster with three fictitious texts, written by the artist himself, is displayed in the gallery. It could be described as the “inner script” of the show.

Lothar Hempel currently has an exhibition in the Dallas Art Museum, USA (until Oct). Further on he will open a solo show at the ICA, London, in Sept 2002.

Wir freuen uns sehr, Lothar Hempels (*1966) erste Berliner Einzelausstellung in unserer Galerie zu zeigen.

Der Künstler zeigt unter dem Titel Diamanten eine neue installative Arbeit, die aus unterschiedlichen ‚Komponenten’ besteht. Der Zusammenklang aller Arbeiten steht im Vordergrund und schafft eine theatralische Situation. Der Künstler: „Es geht um den Moment ‚Jetzt’, der aus einer fast schon holzschnittartigen historischen Perspektive befragt wird. Wie wurden wir das, was wir sind und wo können wir uns verändern?“

Ausgestellt sind zwei farbige Metallreliefs, die sich an den Kacheldekor von U-Bahnhöfen der 30er Jahre anlehnen. „Sie dienen als Hintergründe für nicht mehr zu erwartende, utopische Situationen“.

Ein monumentales weißes Holzrad ist mit der Wand verbunden und ragt in den Raum. Diese Arbeit hat den Titel Implosion. „In ihr verdichten sich repressive ästhetische Erfahrungen; gleichzeitig dient sie als Kulisse. Sie ist Behauptung und Vorschlag zugleich, die den Betrachter in einen Akteur verwandeln kann“.

Ein Video mit dem Titel Ikarus zeigt zwei Frauen, die wie in einem Stummfilm posieren. Sie singen in einem Hinterhof für Geld und machen eine bizarre Erfahrung. Das Video wirkt wie ein verfilmter Traum.

Vier Acrylbilder zeigen Figuren, die zum Teil fiktiv sind oder sich an historische Charaktere anlehnen. Dora Diamant beispielsweise, bezieht sich auf Franz Kafkas letzte Lebensgefährtin. Zitat: Mit Dora studiert Kafka die Thora und den Talmud, und beide träumten davon, in Tel Aviv ein kleines Restaurant zu eröffnen: Die in häuslichen Dingen unerfahrende Dora sollte in der Küche stehen und der linkische, lungenkranke Kafka die Gäste bedienen.

Drei gehäkelte, an die Wände genagelte „Wolldiamanten bewegen sich formal zwischen Folklore und Modernismus“. Ein Poster mit drei fiktiven Texten von Lothar Hempel liegt in der Galerie aus und funktioniert als „inneres Skript“ der Ausstellung.

Im Rahmen einer Einzelausstellung sind neue Arbeiten des Künstler bis Okt dieses Jahres im Dallas Art Museum, USA ausgestellt.
Im Sept 2002 eröffnet Lothar Hempel eine Einzelausstellung im Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in London.
