Exhibition duration: Jul 2007
We are very pleased to announce the sixth solo exhibition of the American
artist Carroll Dunham at c/o – Atle Gerhardsen. The exhibition includes
six monotypes, precursors of the thematic development of the painting series
"Mule" and "Tree" from 2006/2007. The prints on display,
dating from 2005 to 2007, were made using a technique of watercolour on wood.
Over the past 13 years Carroll Dunham has developed a strong stylistic language, especially marked by a cartoon like main character with a phallus-nosed physique, all dressed up in a formal suit with hat. It is not uncommon for this figure to be depicted in the midst of committing violent acts, including pointing a shotgun at an undetermined target somewhere off the confines of the painting.
The three prints from 2005 and 2006 show the described character. He still
boasts all his characteristic quirks, although he now has left out the trousers,
showing his bare bottom. This rear view is warped with an over-dimensional
connotation when it is extended to the spectator as a cutout. The figure that,
up until then, exclusively demonstrated male conventions suddenly discloses
hybrid traits, which eventually culminates in auto-aggressive behavior in
the later print from 2006.
2007 marked the first showing of the "Mule" paintings in a solo
exhibition at Barbara Gladstone in New York, as well as with c/o – Atle
Gerhardsen at the Art 38 Basel.
Three further printed images from 2007 are variations of a geometric tree
form, crowned with red leaves that organically grow into the surface of the
image from various sides. Above all, the grain of the trunk mainly refers
to the material qualities of the wood.
Carroll Dunham developed his typical characters in the period from 1994/1995.
They were spawn from his work with drawings and paintings of organic forms
since the 80s, in which the artist worked with the structure of various types
of wood as a surface to unconsciously trigger his work in the spirit of surrealistic
automatism.
And there we are, back at square one again: the material that originally was
itself a source of inspiration becomes more than a print medium – it
is also employed in its own right as a variable motif in the work.
A retrospective of Carroll Dunham's prints will be on display at the Addison
Gallery of American Art in Andover, MA, opening in Apr 2008. Furthermore,
we are very proud to announce a solo exhibition with Carroll Dunham opening
in Apr 2008 as well at c/o – Atle Gerhardsen, Berlin.

Wir sind sehr erfreut, die sechste Einzelausstellung des amerikanischen Künstlers Carroll Dunham mit c/o – Atle Gerhardsen ankündigen zu können. Gezeigt werden sechs Monotypien, der Technik Aquarell auf Holz aus den Jahren 2005 bis 2007, welche wegweisend für die Themenentwicklung der Gemäldereihen „Mule“ und „Tree“ von 2006/2007 sind.
Carroll Dunham hat in den vergangenen 13 Jahren eine prägnante Formensprache entwickelt, die besonders durch einen Hauptcharakter, jene comichafte, phallusnasige Figur im steifen Anzug, deren Erscheinung durch einen Hut vollständig wird, geprägt ist. Die Figur ist nicht selten in gewaltsame Handlungen eingebunden, so trägt sie eine Schusswaffe, die auf unbestimmte Punkte außerhalb der Bildfläche gerichtet ist.
Drei Druckgraphiken von 2005 und 2006 zeigen besagten Charakter. Er trägt
immer noch alle markanten Züge, doch verzichtet er inzwischen auf Hosen
und zeigt einen blanken Hintern. Diese Rückenansicht erhält nahezu
überdimensionale Bedeutung, wenn sich der Hintern dem Betrachter als
Ausschnitt entgegenreckt. Auch erhält die zuvor ausschließlich
männlich konnotierte Figur derart entblößt plötzlich
zwitterhafte Züge, was sich im späteren Druck von 2006 in autoagressivem
Verhalten bündelt.
2007 wurden Gemälde der Reihe „Mule“ erstmals in einer Einzelausstelllung
bei Barbara Gladstone in New York gezeigt sowie von c/o – Atle Gerhardsen
auf der Art 38 Basel.
Drei weitere Druckgraphiken aus dem Jahr 2007 variieren eine geometrische
Baumform mit roter Laubkrone, die nach verschiedenen Seiten organisch in die
Bildfläche hineinwächst. Die Maserung des Stammes vor allem deutet
auf die Materialeigenschaft des Holzes hin.
Carroll Dunham entwickelte die für ihn typischen Charaktere in den Jahren
1994/1995. Sie entstanden auf der Grundlage von Zeichnungen und Malereien
organischer Formen, die der Künstler seit den 80er Jahre im Sinne des
surrealistischen Automatismus unterbewußt aus der Struktur verschiedener
als Maluntergrund verwendeter Holzarten herausarbeitete.
So scheint sich der Kreis einmal mehr zu schließen: das Material, welches
ursprünglich Inspirationquelle war, findet sich nun nicht nur als Druckmedium,
sondern wird auch im Werk als Motiv variiert.
Eine Retrospektive des druckgraphischen Werkes von Carroll Dunham wird im
Apr 2008 in der Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, MA, eröffnet.
